Germany - PhD Position in International Economics, Universität Hohenheim

The successful applicant will work within the project “The effect of international trade on job flows, wages, and unemployment: The role of search frictions and firm heterogeneity” .

This project is funded by the Thyssen Foundation. It is co-directed by Prof. Gabriel Felbermayr at Universität Hohenheim (Stuttgart) and by Prof. Julien Prat at IAE Barcelona. The candidate should hold a graduate degree (Master or German Diplom) in economics, preferably with a background in trade theory and/or labor economics. He/she should have good quantitative skills, some training in econometrics, as well as a good command of English. The successful candidate carries out doctoral research. She/he takes part in an international cooperation between IAE Barcelona and Universität Hohenheim. She/he also benefits from the doctoral program offered by Tübingen-Hohenheim Economics e.V., from a close integration into the International Economics Group at Universität Hohenheim, and from the support offered by the FZID Recearch Center.

The successful candidate is based in Stuttgart during academic terms. The monthly stipend is EUR 1500 net of taxes. Additional funds for travel and IT are available. A supplementary assignment as teaching assistant is possible. The contract runs for an initial period of two years, but is renewable.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to applicants who have an excellent academic record and who is a citizen or resident (for a minimum of three years) of either Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Uruguay or Venezuela and who are applying for admission onto the Full-time MBA or MBA in International Business in September 2010. An award may be withdrawn if a student fails to meet the academic standards set by the University.

Although applications for the scholarship should be made before 31 May 2010, the scholarship will only be awarded to an applicant who has firmly accepted their offer through payment of the deposit.

Applicants who hold full sponsorships or who are entitled to fee omission are not eligible for the scholarship.

If an applicant is successful in being awarded the scholarship, but subsequently declines their offer of admission on the MBA programme, the award of the scholarship will be withdrawn and awarded to another applicant.

How to Apply

Applicants should submit a 1,000 word essay, explaining why they feel they should be awarded the scholarship, and how the scholarship will benefit them. This essay should accompany their application for the MBA programme.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and the benefits to the student. The decision will be made by a committee consisting of Directors and key staff from Admissions.

If you have already sent your application, you are welcome to apply separately. Please enclose your full name and contact details as stated in your programme application. Separate scholarship applications without these details will not be considered.

Northumbria International Scholarships 2009/10 and 2010/11 - Northumbria University

We are delighted to announce details of the range of scholarships available in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 academic years. In the current academic year more than 500 students from over 20 different countries have been awarded a Northumbria University International Scholarship.

Most courses at Northumbria University have an intake in September, but a number also have an intake in January or later in the year. Scholarships are available for both intakes.

In most cases the amount of scholarship given will be in the range GBP 500-1000. If you are awarded a scholarship, your tuition fees in your first academic year of study will be reduced by the relevant amount. Scholarships cannot be extended for subsequent years of study.

Eligibility and Selection

You will be eligible for consideration if you have overseas (non-EU) fees status, and don't currently reside within the UK (if you are unsure please click here to find out your status - site will open in a new window). Applicants for all levels of full-time study at Northumbria’s Newcastle campuses will be considered (NB this does not apply to English Pre-Sessional Programmes).

Selection is based primarily on outstanding academic achievement, although, other factors may be taken into account, such as your level of English proficiency and any professional or non-academic achievements. Financial need cannot and will not be taken into consideration. Scholarships are not awarded automatically.

When the University receives your application form for one of our programmes, you will automatically be assessed for scholarship eligibility. There is no separate scholarship application to complete so it is important that you submit all relevant information with your initial application. You will usually be notified of any award at the same time that you are offered a place at the University.

Postgraduate Scholarships Available for 2010 Entrants

The University of Edinburgh will be offering 30 International Master's Scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year.

10 of these Scholarships ("Homecoming Scotland" Scholarships) have a value of £5,000 while 20 fall under the Global Master's Scholarships Scheme and have a value of £3,000 each.

The deadline for receipt of applications for both Scholarships is the 1st April 2010 and applicants shoud complete an online application in order to be considered for these awards.

For courses starting in September 2010 (or between September 2010 and June 2011 for MPhil/PhD research degrees), De Montfort University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Philip Tasker, is delighted to offer £500 scholarships to overseas students.

The £500 scholarships will be paid towards the full tuition fees of overseas-status students from any country in the world who wish to study the following types of courses at De Montfort University, Leicester:

- Full-time undergraduate degrees (BA/BSc/LLB) in any subject
- Full-time Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters courses (PGDip/MA/MSc/MBA/LLM) in any subject
- Full-time MPhil/PhD research degrees in any subject

The £500 scholarship will be deducted from the full tuition fee at the beginning of the first (or only) year of study.

The rules
• Both self-funding and sponsored students are eligible to apply.
• No cash alternatives will be offered and the scholarship cannot be transferred to any other course at DMU or to any other nominated recipient.
• Valid only for September 2010 entry (or between September 2010 and June 2011 for research applicants) – scholarships cannot be deferred with an application until September 2011 or later
• For overseas students who are also entitled to the £500 discount for early payment of their fees in full at enrolment, a total of £1000 will be deducted from the full tuition fee at enrolment.
• For applicants who also qualify for the £500 Alumni Scholarship, a further £500 will be deducted from the tuition fee at enrolment.
• If an applicant is allocated a scholarship but then withdraws their application or does not enrol onto the course for any reason, the scholarship is forfeited.
• The University reserves the right to withdraw scholarships, or not allocate scholarships, at any point before they are allocated.

Open to University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students enrolled as degree-seeking undergraduates. Comments: Postgraduate Awards are awarded by the University Council, on the recommendation of the Senate, to International candidates in the first year of their thesis research for a Master's degree.

Tenure of a Postgraduate Award by a Master's degree student is for one year, or until the thesis is submitted, (whichever period is the shorter.) Students must be in the first year of their thesis research to be eligible for an Award. Types of scholarships

a) Scholarships for foreign university students (enrolled at least in the 6^th semester) to take part in Master study over a period of 1 to 2 semesters (from 5 to 10 months) at Slovak universities.

b) Scholarships for foreign PhD students to take a part of PhD study over a period of 1 to 12 months at Slovak universities or research institutes.

Scholarship designation

The scholarship is designated to cover living costs (accommodation, boarding, etc.) of a study, research and teaching stay of foreign applicants at Slovak universities and research institutions. Copenhagen International School (CIS) offers a number of scholarships and exhibitions at the school each year for students, both international and Danish, who are joining the school to undertake and complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who are academically exceptional, well-rounded students.
Exhibitions will be awarded to applicants who are academically excellent, well-rounded students.
Students who have been awarded scholarships or exhibitions will be at an advantage when applying to universities and colleges.
For scholarship applicants who require financial assistance in order to enter CIS for grades 11 to 12, the school is offering a maximum of 10 financial awards, with financial assistance to cover up to 85% of the tuition fees. Parents will be asked for documentation to support the application for financial assistance.
A further three three-year financial scholarships are available to students entering grade 10 / Pre-IB. The financial assistance may cover up to 85% of the tuition fees. Parents will be asked for documentation to support the application for financial assistance.
Honours scholarships and exhibitions are available to students who do not require financial assistance, but fulfil the other criteria. These do not offer any financial benefit.

The Graduate Studies in International Affairs program offers up to four Hedley Bull Scholarships each year for full-time study in the Master of Arts (International Relations) commencing in semester one. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Master of Arts (International Relations).

When applying for the MA (International Relations), eligible applicants for the Hedley Bull Scholarship should include a covering letter indicating their interest in being considered for the scholarship and making the case for being granted one. The covering letter together with the application for the MA (International Relations) (including transcripts and three academic references) will be considered as the full application for the scholarship. There is no need to provide a separate application. The scholarship provides a full-fee waiver for three full-time sessions (semesters). This amounts to 48 units of graduate coursework and a 24-unit thesis session.

PhD Studentships in Statistics - University of Bristol

Applications are invited for a number of PhD studentships in the Statistics Group, Department of Mathematics, University of Bristol, UK. The Statistics Group has an international reputation for excellence in research and in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise it was awarded ratings of 5*A.

The studentships will be restricted to students of a high quality - the normal entry requirement is the equivalent of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours at undergraduate level. Worldwide qualified students are encouraged to apply.

The Statistics Group offers a number of studentships up to a maximum of 3.5 year studentships for UK and EU PhD students who have been residents in the UK for 3 years prior to application, and fees-only funding for other EU students. The studentships include a tax-free stipend of £12,600 per year.

For overseas students, the university has several sources of funding available including the Overseas Research Studentship (ORS) and Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award (DHPA). The scholarships cover the overseas tuition fee plus a maintenance stipend. The funding application for the academic year 2008 is closed, but it will be open soon for the academic year 2009.

LMANN TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP FUND (LUTSF) 2008/2009 AWARDS

LUTSF has pleasure in announcing 21 travel scholarships for 2008/09. The funded projects highlight the policy of the Fund to support a diverse range of journeys and to assist individuals at different stages in their careers to travel to enrich their practice and pursue a personal passion.

Lisa Ullmann, in whose memory the Fund was established in 1986, was an inspiration to those who knew her or who came into contact with her work. A distinguished teacher, she travelled worldwide to teach others. It is in memory of her vivacity, passion and energy that the committee continues her work by selecting movement and dance practitioners to further or celebrate their own practice by making a journey. Since giving its first awards in 1987 LUTSF has provided 375 travel scholarships to help people to pursue an extraordinarily wide range of projects. Over the years LUTSF awards have totalled about £168,000.

This year one scholarship has been awarded in memory of Vivien Gear, LUTSF secretary who died suddenly in 2007. The scholarship winner was recommended by the British Ballet Organisation with whom Vivien also worked.

APAI Advanced Tool Wear Analysis

The research project is part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project, investigating wear on sheet metal forming tools. The project involves industry partners from within the automotive and tooling industries. The appointee will investigate the localised loading conditions and wear response at the surface of typical sheet metal forming dies. State-of-the-art Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques and experimental methods will be used to develop a clearer understanding of the wear behaviour; with much focus on the micro-scale mechanisms that occur. The outcomes of the project will have particular relevance to the product development and stamping engineering processes used in the automotive industry.

Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding are eligible to apply. This program is funded by Congress and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Critical Need Languages available on ISEP programs include Chinese, Korean, and Russian (available in Latvia and Estonia).

National Security Education Program
Awards usually cover the full cost of study and travel abroad. Created by Congress in 1991, NSEP was intended to encourage American students to study less commonly taught languages and cultures, especially in nations considered to be of interest to national security. The program also aspires to increase the number of Americans qualified for government service and international diplomacy. After graduation, student recipients are required to work for an office or agency of the Federal Government involved in national security affairs or in higher education.

Rotary Foundation
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships of up to $26,000 provide funding for one academic year of study in another country. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion. ISEP students studying in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish or Swedish may qualify for the Cultural Ambassador Scholarship.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Bridging Scholarships
For study abroad in Japan. Undergraduate students of any major are eligible to apply. The awards are typically $2,500 for semester-long programs or $4,000 for academic-year programs. The application deadline is in April.

Morgan Stanley Japan Scholarships
Awards two $7,500 scholarships to US students who will be studying in Japan for the academic year to augment its contribution to the Bridging Project for Study Abroad in Japan. Eligible students include juniors and seniors at US universities with an interest in economics and international finance who have been accepted for study in Japan. Winners may also be considered for internships at Morgan Stanley Japan's Tokyo headquarters.

Freeman-ASIA Scholarships
Designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning on studying overseas in East or Southeast Asia.

A PhD position is being made available in the area of Adaptive Musical Processes in Digital Interactive Media.

Adaptive music is defined as computer-generated music that can be influenced, consciously or unconsciously, by the audience or individual listener. Adaptive music is a type of interactive music where interaction does not place specific demands on the part of the user in regard to expertise or training. Adaptive music is a quickly expanding field, which is gaining increased application in computer games, web design, net art and experience design.

Research will be conducted within the framework of The Danish Institute of Electronic Music (DIEM) at the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus in collaboration with The Department of Computer Science and the Institute for Information and Media Sciences (IMV) at the University of Aarhus.

The project will explore how adaptive musical processes can be used to induce critical reflection as well as creative involvement on the part of the listener.

This will be achieved by

1. examining, charting, describing and analyzing existing forms of adaptive music

2. establishing criteria for functional design in adaptive musical systems

3. creating new forms of adaptive music through case studies within the established design criteria

4. evaluating case studies in light of research in interaction and interface design

Research will be based upon theories and methods in the areas of human computer interaction and interface design and upon an empirical research approach derived from case studies. Case studies will be supplemented with the investigation of listener/user evaluation of functionality and artistic quality in adaptive music.

The PhD position will be given to a qualified applicant with a relevant education and degree with a background in interactive music, programming and digital audio.

The PhD scholar will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Aarhus, with the aim of completing a PhD degree at the Institute of Information and Media Studies, University of Aarhus. The PhD scholar will be affiliated with the postgraduate programmes of study ICT, Communication, Media Studies and Journalism.

Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation (AISF) offers scholarship to Ph.D candidates enrolled in the graduate schools located in the Kanto area in Japan.

(1)Eligibility requirements (All the following conditions must be satisfied).

1. A student from the world over with non-Japanese nationality who is enrolled in a graduate school in the Kanto area, and who is expecting to obtain his/her Ph.D. within the term of the AISF scholarship. This includes those who are enrolled in graduate school as researchers because of their going over the required period as a regular student, or because of their obtaining their Ph.D. from a foreign graduate school.

2. A student whose graduate school (or laboratory) and place of residence are in the Kanto area (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama , Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Gunma Prefectures)

3. A student who is interested in international understanding and friendship, and willing to participate in AISF sponsored activities.

(2)Activities

1. Scholarship recipients are expected to visit the AISF office monthly to receive their scholarship stipend, and to report their progress.

2. AISF will sponsor gatherings which will give all recipients a chance to meet the directors, trustees and members of the selection committee. At the end of the academic year, recipients are also expected to report their progress at such a gathering.

3. AISF will sponsor a three day Rest and Relaxation Trip to Karuizawa in July.

4. Travel Grant for post-AISF students with Ph.D. Any Atsumi scholarship recipient who is awarded a Ph.D., will be eligible for a travel grant. This grant will cover transportation, lodging, and registration fees to attend a conference held abroad within one year of the recipient being awarded his/her Ph.D. If one lives abroad, the grant can be used to visit Japan.

(3)Scholarship Benefits and Conditions.

1. The monthly stipend will be 200,000 yen. AISF will award the scholarship to 12 students since 2000 fiscal year.

2. A scholarship will be awarded for one year (April through March). No extension will be granted.

3. The scholarship will be terminated in any of the following cases:

a. When a recipient is no longer registered in a Japanese graduate program.

b. Due to illness or any other reason when a recipient is forced to withdraw or cannot continue his/her school work.

c. If the supervising professor deems a recipient unqualified to continue his/her study or research.

d. If AISF finds a recipient involved in any unethical behavior.

e. When it is discovered that the applicant's written application form contains misleading or false information.

f. If AISF deems a recipient unqualified to continue his/her scholarship.

The Marine Institute and the School of Earth Ocean and Environmental Science at the University of Plymouth have secured joint funding from Great Western Research and industrial partners for a study on the application of regional ocean modelling for planning and environmental impact assessment purposes for tidal stream energy generation. This study presents an exciting opportunity to apply leading edge research in coastal oceanography to the development of marine renewable energy and to work closely with industrial partners which are actively involved in device development, marine energy generation, and renewable energy planning and permitting.

Project description The next step in the development of commercially viable tidal stream energy technology is the realization of deployments of arrays of devices. This step will require tools for proper resource assessment as well as determination of the potential environmental impacts due to these arrays. This project will develop a tool for performing such activities through the adaptation of a coastal ocean modelling system for the task. This tool shall be able to account for real world conditions such as complex bathymetry, free surface and bottom boundary layers, flow stratification and time varying flow conditions. The developed product shall be applied to a real world scenario during the course of the project.

We are looking for an MSc or BSc graduate in a relevant discipline such as oceanography, engineering, or marine or environmental sciences, with a keen interest in numerical modelling and the development of marine renewable energy. You will be a member of the Coastal Processes Research Group www.coastalprocesses.org in Plymouth but will work closely with collaborators from a companion project based at the University of Bristol and the industrial partners in Bristol. Desirable skills include familiarity with coastal ocean modelling, coastal oceanography, and/or hydraulic engineering and high computer literacy as well as familiarity with common programming languages. Training will be provided as required.

The preferred starting date for the studentship will be 1 July 2008.

The studentship is for three years and the student will receive a stipend of £12940 per annum and tuition fees (approximately £3250 pa).

The studentship will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home/EU fees with appropriate qualification.

The PhD project will involve research into the emerging areas of complex systems theory, bio-technology and nano-engineering, followed by development of these findings into a more universal innovation knowledge framework. The project will involve extensive use of the developed tools, methods and strategies to create novel solutions to real world and industry problems.

Candidates for this post are expected to have a Masters degree in one or a combination of electronic/computing/physics/biological/mathematics disciplines. A specific knowledge of expert systems and/or complex systems would be of particular benefit. Strong candidates with a BEng or BSc and work experience in the above areas may be considered for the post. Candidates should demonstrate good programming skills and, ideally, knowledge of NetLogo and VBNet.

UEA International Student Scholarships

The University of East Anglia awards over £1,000,000 of scholarships each year to support international students in their studies. The awards are made by individual Schools of Study in the University. All international students (outside the European Union) are considered for a scholarship of between 10% and 50% of tuition fees.
In order to be considered for a UEA scholarship you do not need to make a separate application. Please indicate on your application for admission that you wish to be considered for a scholarship.

It is important to make an application as early as possible because they are considered as they are received. So apply early to make sure of the best chance of success. If you are granted a scholarship, you will be informed at the time you receive your offer of a place at UEA.

ICS MQRES Lab-on-a-chip Microbiology PhD Scholarship - Macquarie University (Australia)

PhD Scholarship in Experimental Lab-on-a-chip Devices for Cell and Microbial Identification

A full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) is currently available in the Division of Information and Communication Sciences for a project in experimental lab-on-a-chip devices in the department of physics. The successful candidate will undertake PhD research on design and fabrication of novel microfluidic devices for microbiology.

The field of microfluidics concerns itself with a wide variety of interdisciplinary topics including fundamental questions in biology chemistry and physics. This project will involve the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices for concentrating and separating microbes, allowing for faster and earlier detection of dangerous organisms in fluids ranging from drinking water to blood. Fabrication will be done using an in-house semiconductor fabrication facility, and characterization will be done using state of the art facilities in the biology department. The skills gained in this PhD project will be valuable in the growing field of biotechnology.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in a relevant discipline (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Biology) , such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component. Early career professionals interested in returning to higher degree studies are also encouraged to apply.

The MQRES stipend is currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt (2008) for a maximum tenure of 3.5 years full-time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be sponsored for the scholarship tenure.

What does MUIS cover?

Macquarie University International Scholarships are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study on campus in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree.

Scholarships will be granted to cover the credit points required to complete a single undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

The scholarship provides course fees for the minimum course duration. No additional allowances are payable. The scholarship does NOT provide financial support in the form of a living allowance, nor does it provide for the cost of visa application, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), airfares, accommodation, conferences or other costs associated with study. Annual renewal of the MUIS is subject to satisfactory performance in the Macquarie University degree program.

The scholarships, in the amount of $8,000 each, provide the Scholars with an opportunity to visit clinical, teaching, and research activities in North America and to attend and participate fully in the educational opportunities and activities of the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress.

This scholarship endowment was originally provided through the legacy left to the College by Dr. Paul R. Hawley (FACS Hon), former College Director. More recently, a bequest from the family of Dr. Abdol Islami (FACS) and gifts from others to the International Guest Scholarship endowment have enabled the College to expand the number of scholarship awards.

The scholarship requirements are:

-Applicants must be graduates of schools of medicine.
-Applicants must be at least 35 years old, but no older than 44, on the date that the completed application is filed.
-Applicants must submit their applications from their intended permanent location. Applications will be accepted for processing only when the applicants have been in surgical practice, teaching, or research for a minimum of one year at their intended permanent location, following completion of all formal training (including fellowships and scholarships).
-Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and/or research in accordance with the standards of the applicant’s country.
-Applicants whose careers are in the developing stage are deemed more suitable than those who are serving in senior academic appointments.
-Applicants must submit a fully completed application form provided by the College on its Web site. The application and accompanying materials must be typewritten and in English. Submission of a curriculum vitae only is not acceptable.
-Applicants must provide a list of all of their publications and must submit, in addition, three complete publications (reprints or manuscripts) of their choice from that list.
-Applicants must submit letters of recommendation from three of their colleagues. One letter must be from the chair of the department in which they hold academic appointment, or a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons residing in their country. The chair’s or the Fellow’s letter is to include a specific statement detailing the nature and extent of the teaching and other academic involvement of the applicant. Letters of recommendation should be submitted in envelopes sealed by the recommenders.
-Applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae of no more than 10 pages.
-Applicants may submit a photograph. (Passport size is preferable.)
-The International Guest Scholarships must be used in the year for which they are designated. They cannot be postponed.
-Applicants who are awarded scholarships are expected to provide a full written report of the experiences provided through the scholarships upon completion of their tours.
-An unsuccessful applicant may reapply only twice and only by completing and submitting a current application form provided by the College, together with new supporting documentation.

The scholarships provide successful applicants with the privilege of participating in the College’s annual Clinical Congress in October, with public recognition of their presence. They will receive gratis admission to selected postgraduate courses plus admission to all lectures, demonstrations, and exhibits, which are an integral part of the Clinical Congress. Assistance will be provided in arranging visits, following the Clinical Congress, to various clinics and universities of their choice.
In order to qualify for consideration by the selection committee, all of the above requirements must be fulfilled.

Graduate Diploma in Architecture scholarship
This scholarship has been generously sponsored by the Tooley and Foster Partnership, one of the UK’s longest established architectural practices.
-Amount: £2,000 per annum for two years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. Eligibility
All applicants must meet the conditions of entry to university postgraduate studies at the University and School of the built environment. All candidates must have been offered a place on one of the programs listed above degree.

All scholarships are available for one year full-time or two-year part-time (or open / distance learning programs), as appropriate, leading to a Master’s degree in School ‘ built environment at Oxford Brookes University. All scholarship applicants must begin their studies in the academic year 2008-09.

The scholarships are open to all candidates from Britain, the EU and abroad, as appropriate.

Scholarship 2008 - Young Women in Engineering

Science Foundation Ireland invests in academic researchers and research teams who will generate new knowledge, leading edge technologies, and competitive enterprises in their fields through a large number of programmes. SFI also advances co-operative efforts among education, government, and industry that support its fields of emphasis and promotes Ireland’s ensuing achievements around the world. One component of the SFI strategy is a series of investments which will increase and sustain the participation of women within the Irish research community. SFI’s objective is to encourage and support the development of mechanisms and practices which will ensure that there is a fully competitive technical workforce to build a knowledge driven economy and to benefit from the full participation of women in research-based careers.

The Science Foundation Ireland/DELL Scholarship 2008 – Young Women in Engineering aims to attract and encourage more high-achieving young women into third-level education in engineering disciplines. The Scholarship is supported by DELL which will supply all the scholars with notebook computers.

The third year of the scheme (academic year 2008/2009) will again focus on young women entering designated four-year engineering degree programmes in third-level institutions in Ireland. The designated courses are among those where women have traditionally been under-represented. In addition, the 2008 list of Eligible Courses includes two courses, DN087 and DN080, which offer 3 years of undergraduate study leading to a Master in Engineering degree after a further two years of study (5 years total). Students applying for these two courses will receive SFI Scholarships for the 3 years of undergraduate study only.

The Scholarship
SFI Scholars will receive:

-An annual award of €2,000 administered through their host institution
-A gift of a DELL notebook computer at the start of their degree
-The assistance and support of an active researcher as a mentor throughout their undergraduate career
- At least one summer research-internship in an academic research laboratory or an industry R&D laboratory funded for example by the SFI UREKA programme

The Faculty of Business and Law is pleased to announce 10 Scholarships for overseas students wishing to start courses in September 2008.

The Faculty of Business and Law is committed to supporting international students to benefit from study in the UK. These £1000 scholarships are equivalent to a reduction of around 10% on the full tuition fees, and will be paid towards the full tuition fees of overseas-status students from any country in the world who wish to study any of the following types of courses within the Faculty of Business and Law, at De Montfort University, Leicester:

• Full-time undergraduate degrees (BA/BSc) in any subject
• Full-time Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters courses (PGDip/MA/MSc/MBA/LLM) in any subject
• Full-time MPhil/PhD research degrees in any subject

The scholarships are available for courses starting in September 2008 only (or between September 2008 and June 2009 for MPhil/PhD research degrees).

The £1000 scholarship will be made as a one-off payment and will be deducted from the full tuition fee at the beginning of the first (or only) year of study.

Students progressing to DMU through one of our established progression schemes or collaborative partnerships can also apply for these scholarships if they wish to.

Only overseas status students are eligible to apply.

We will award up to 10 x £1000 scholarships for the above courses starting in September 2008. There will be a limited number of scholarships awarded by Faculty:

Scholarships will be awarded based on the submission of a 500 word essay, to be written by the applicant and assessed by a panel of Faculty representatives.

How to Apply

1. Choose the course to which you would like to apply.

2.Complete and submit an application form for the course you wish to study. Details of how to apply can be found online at dmu.ac.uk/international and in our international prospectuses. If your application is successful, you will be sent an offer letter. You may already be holding an offer of a place on a course starting in 2008/09.

3. Once you have your offer letter (Conditional or Unconditional), and you wish to apply for one of the Faculty of Business and Law International Scholarships 2008/09, you must write a 500-word essay.

After the deadline for applications, all essays will be assessed by a panel of Faculty representatives and the scholarships will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate well, in the opinion of the panel, the following:

• Excellent written communication skills
• Clear understanding of the course you wish to study
• Good understanding of what you hope to gain from UK Higher Education
• Good understanding of the employment sector you wish to enter after graduation and the skills you may need
• How this scholarship will help you with your studies and in the future
• Ambition for the future, motivation and enthusiasm for your subject and your studies
• Strong academic skills as evidenced by your prior qualifications and/or academic reference as part of your application form.

Deadline for Applications
If you wish to apply for an International Scholarship you must have received your offer letter and submitted your essay by 1 August 2008. No essays received after this date will be accepted under any circumstances. You will receive an email acknowledgement of your essay submission when we receive it. Allocation Process
Following the deadline of 1 August 2008, a panel of Faculty representatives will sit to assess all essay submissions. All successful applicants who have been awarded a scholarship will be notified by email and letter (standard mail) by 1 September 2008. The £1000 scholarships will be deducted from the full tuition fee of successful applicants when you arrive to enrol at DMU.

The Rules
• Overseas-status students only are eligible to apply for the scholarships.
• Both self-funding and sponsored students are eligible to apply.
• No cash alternatives will be offered and the scholarship cannot be transferred to any other course at DMU or to any other nominated recipient.
• Valid only for September 2008 entry (or between September 2008 and June 2009 for research applicants) – scholarships cannot be deferred with an application until September 2009 or later.
• For overseas students who are also entitled to a 5% discount for early payment of their fees in full at enrolment, the £2000 scholarship will be deducted first from the full fee, then the 5% discounted from the reduced fee.
• These scholarships will not be awarded in conjunction with any other scholarship, such as the Alumni Scholarships 2008 – students may receive one DMU scholarship only, normally the one of greater value.
• If an applicant is allocated a scholarship but then withdraws their application or does not enrol onto the course for any reason, the scholarship is forfeited.
• The University reserves the right to withdraw scholarships, or not allocate scholarships, at any point before they are allocated.

Overseas Student Bursaries September 2008

£750 Art and Design International Bursaries

£750 is offered to overseas students who have firmly accepted a place on an undergraduate or postgraduate art and design course by 31 August 2008. 5% discount is also offered by DMU for early fee payment. Students should have either:

-For BA, BSc and HND courses: Accepted a DMU art and design course as firm (CF or UF) by 31 August 2008, or
-For MA, MSc, PhD and BArch courses: Paid their fee deposit for a DMU art and design postgraduate course by 31 August 2008.

£40 Art and Design Materials Voucher

The Faculty of Art and Design is also offering undergraduate students a £40 voucher for materials. This will be given to students enrolling in September 2008.

Please note:

-Students may only be awarded one Bursary or Scholarship from DMU.
-Bursaries are available to students paying the overseas fee and enrolling in September 2008 (or in the 2008/9 academic year for MA and PhD courses with later start dates).
5% early payment discount is deducted from the lower fee of £8,205.
-These bursaries will be awarded automatically at enrolment – no application is needed.
-Bursaries are for new students in the 2008/9 academic year only

De Montfort University (DMU) is committed to supporting talented graduates to enhance their careers and personal development through postgraduate study.

We are therefore delighted to offer five new Postgraduate Scholarships of £2000 each to help five first class graduates study a full-time Masters (MA/MSc) course at DMU Leicester.

The scholarships are available for full-time Masters courses* starting in September/October 2008 only and Art and Design Courses starting in January - June 2009.

3. Once you have your offer letter for one of our eligible full-time Masters courses (Conditional or Unconditional), and you wish to apply for a Postgraduate Scholarship, you must write a 500-word statement outlining, as a minimum:
a) why you wish to study this course and what you hope to gain from it (personally and professionally as appropriate)
b) what skills and experience – other than your academic qualifications – you would bring to the course
c) what your long term career aspirations are d) what difference the £2000 scholarship would make to you.

The £2000 scholarships are equivalent to a reduction of around 20% on the full tuition fees, and will be paid towards the full tuition fees of overseas-status students from any country in the world who wish to study any of the following types of courses at De Montfort University, Leicester:

Australian Government Scholarships

Introduction

Australian Scholarships is an initiative of the Australian Government to promote education cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region. Over the five years from 1 July 2006, Australian Scholarships will more than double the number of education awards offered for the region. The awards will be granted to more than 19,000 people for study and research in Australia. It has been said that the scholarships continue the spirit of the Colombo Plan.

Background

Australian Government Scholarships - An Overview

It was announced on the 26 April 2006 that Australia will double the number of educational scholarships it offers in the Asia-Pacific region. The new program, will be called Australian Scholarships, and will provide nearly $1.4 billion in funding over five years for more than 19,000 scholarships. (Note tables below) The program was announced as part of the White Pager on Australia’s overseas aid program Australian Aid: Promoting Growth and Stability.
The program reflect the geographic focus of Australia’s aid program and include 51 countries extending from Turkey and Jordan in the west, across Japan in the east and through to Pacific.
The initiative brings together
Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), managed by Australia’s international aid agency, AusAID Endeavour scholarships, administered by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) which will target future leaders in the region for advanced study, a new program managed by AusAid. The Australian Partnership Scholarships (APS) and the Australian Centre of International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Scholarship Scheme will continue to be managed by AusAID. In addition, there are two new types of scholarships managed by AusAID– Australian Regional Development Scholarships specifically for students from Pacific Islands and Carnegie Mellon University-AusAID Scholarships (only for students attending Carnegie Mellon University).
In addition to the Australian Scholarship program, DEST has also increased the amount of funding to support Australian students to travel aboard not only under student exchange arrangements but to also undertake research.
The Australian Scholarship Program is going to be supported by a biennial meeting of Asia-Pacific Education Ministers and by the development of strong in-country alumni networks by the Australian Government. The first meeting was held in Brisbane as part of the AEI conference in March 2006.
